A true gem of the girl group sound, "
Lookin' For Boys" b/w "
Kenny" was actually crafted (as so many girl group classics) by male Svengalis. In this case, it was the production/songwriting team of Bob Feldman, Jerry Goldstein and Richard Gottehrer (often shortened to F-G-G) who were also the masterminds behind many of
The Angels' greatest tunes including their #1 hit "My Boyfriend's Back." But after a falling out with
The Angels in 1964, Feldman, Goldstein, and Gottehrer set out to prove that it was them, not
The Angels, who were responsible for making the hits. So taking a "Boyfriend" clone intended for
The Angels, the guys found four girls from Brooklyn to sing, dubbed them
The Pin-Ups, and, perhaps inspired by Leiber and Stoller's Red Bird label, started their own label, Stork, to release the track. Feldman even chaperoned the girls on a 2000 mile tour promoting the record, but alas, despite everything the record had going for it, the sound failed to draw success twice, and the record was relegated to obscurity.

The Pin-Ups never recorded another record though I've heard that one of the members later sang with a group called
The Tulips (perhaps the group that released "You Better Stay Away From My Baby" [MGM K13375]). Feldman, Goldstein, and Gottehrer went on to succeed with their own recordings as
The Strangeloves, and Gottehrer later co-founded Sire Records and produced such killer artists as
Richard Hell and The Voidoids,
Blondie,
Marshall Crenshaw, and
Robert Gordon.
